Combating Information Overload

Information overload” is a term popularized by Alvin Toffler that refers to the difficulty a person can have understanding an issue and making decisions that can be caused by the presence of too much information.  – Wikipedia

Scenario:

Something new just came out and it’s the most exciting thing in the world!

What do you do now?

Here’s what I do personally…

I start by asking myself this one question: “Can I take this right now and use it in my business to make it grow in profits?”

The key words in that question are “right now” and “grow in profits”.

1. I want to be sure that I can justify taking the time out to learn it inside and out then apply it immediately and not let it collect cyber dust.

2. If it is something that I will learn from or a tool for my business, will it effect my bottom line positively when applied in my sales process.

If the answer is no, then I simply pass on it.

It’s easy to be caught up in the hype of a launch and sucked into the excitement, thus grabbing your affiliate link and running to every traffic exchange, safelist, and social network to find everyone who hasn’t heard the great news yet.

The problem is this can do more harm than good in the long run for you, by spreading your time, effort, and money thin.

The trick is to focus on a singular goal.  Having a plan is key.  Do you have a certain income level you want to attain online?  Start with a small goal, but have the bigger end goal in mind.

For instance, let’s say I want to make $300 a month.   The math on that works out to an average of $10 a day give or take 28 or 31 days in the month.   So if I focus on making a plan for creating $10 a day and each day focus on that singular goal, what do you think my chances are of hitting that goal?

That could easily be the sale of one online ebook a day as an affiliate.  Just one sale.   Do you think if you focused on creating one sale of one ebook each day and NOTHING else, do you think that could be possible?

Thinking like this helps you separate what is important to you.  If that was your goal each day, then your only focus would be on selling that ebook and the resources available to you to make it happen.

A Lesson In List Building.

List Building Should Be Your # 1 Priority In Your Business At All Times. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING comes second. Your focus should at all times be on building your list.

Let’s say you are a member of a program that you love and want to share with others.  You work for hours, days, weeks, and maybe months to drive traffic to that program and build your downline.  If that program goes south, you decide that program isn’t for you, or you have another program you want to share, you have to start getting all of that traffic all over again.  If you have a list then it’s as easy as sending out an email to your already subscribers in each of those instances.

If you were building your list, you have a foundation to build from when you have to start over.

Work for the traffic once, get it over and over again.  Simple as that.

Now you will hear people say that the money is in the list. This surprising is not true!

I know that’s weird coming from an avid list builder, BUT, here’s the truth…

The money is in the relationship that you have with your list.

The relationship. If you focus on building a list of subscribers that know like and trust you, then you stand to earn more from that list creating happy repeat customers that will buy from you again and again.

So how do you do this?

It starts with two things…

1. Quality of the subscriber.

The quality of the subscriber is based off of what you give them as your “bait” to get them on your list and also where you place this “bait” (How they find the bait ie: adwords, traffic exchanges, safelists, etc)

Quality of subscribers is based on where the subscriber currently sits in the development phase of becoming an online marketer:

*Biz op phase: They are interested in overnight success and systems that do all of the work for them. Push button success.

Eventually develops into:

*Excited Newbie phase: They understand that they need to do some work to make things happen but still need to be held by the hand and directed.

Eventually develops into:

*Intelligent marketer phase: They understand what needs to be done and are always focused on finding tools and services to help them better their business.

2. Giving the quality content to the correct type of subscriber.

You need to know what target subscriber you want on your list and what they would be interested in buying. Once you know who you will target and what you will sell them, creating freebies based around that will be easy.

You do not start building a list until you know what you want to sell that list.

In traffic exchanges all 3 of these stages of marketers exist.  I personally target the middle group and my content that I provide is based around helping them get to the next level.

If you target the right subscriber with the right content that can help them get to where they are going or want to go trust,  a great relationship, and ultimately profit can come along with it.

Where Are YOU?

I personally like simple, I think that’s a big reason why I gravitate towards creating steps for others to follow. And the less steps essentially the easier it is.  Take for instance your membership at thumbvu.   It’s set up in three steps.  The key is to follow each step carefully and by the time you finish the last step you should have a better understanding of how the program works.

The most important step is step 1 editing your profile. Adding in your picture and social information.  Those who have done so already understand the power of branding online.

How branding works…

We buy from who we know like and trust, and keep in mind that we don’t buy “things” we essentially buy people.  So with branding think of it as constantly getting your face out there and selling the idea of YOU.  The more someone see’s your face the more likely they will take notice of what you are doing. With all of the make a million dollars in a week and shady marketers out there, it’s important to get out in front of your business and make your self approachable and reachable.

Some may say that’s great John, but I don’t want to be out there in the lime light.  That’s fine then, but you still want to think about branding in some way.  Pick a particular business name, username, and/or picture and brand yourself to that.

The Power Of Building Teams!

When I first started online I tried to do everything myself.  It was a slow process to say the least.  I learned alot, but it wasn’t until I started to team up with like minded individuals that my business really started to kick off.

You can partner with others as a mastermind to discover new information and ways of thinking.  This is great for bouncing around ideas and making things happen, as it gets easier to create when people work together.

Interview With James Holmes – Internet Marketing Blue Print

I just wrapped up an awesome interview with James Holmes.  A while back he had asked me if I would like to be interviewed about thumbvu, list building, and more.  My answer?  Heck yes!
